Animal sacrifice is widely practised in Nepal. Hundreds of thousands of animals are killed in cruel ways on ‘auspicious’ days. Some of these horrendous rituals are subsidised by the government and shown live on national TV. Even the army and police regularly conduct sacrifices.

Apart from common methods of sacrifice by slitting throats and beheading, other more extreme forms of blood sacrifices are used – live goats are torn apart by young men, snakes are burned alive, pigs and buffaloes are skinned alive, and animals have their hearts ripped out before they are dead.

Animals are also abused for entertainment – cruel practices include bear dancing, elephant polo, bull fights, yak blood drinking, and the tearing apart of live goats.

Nepal has no laws to regulate sacrifices and sports involving animals. Sacrifices are usually conducted with children present, and there is very little awareness about the welfare problems involved, particularly in the transport and killing. During the Dasain festival, Nepal’s largest festival, most villages kill at around 250-1000 animals each. The Gadhimai festival takes place once every 5 years and ranks among the world’s worst forms of animal cruelty. More than 200,000 animals are sacrificed over just 2 days. More than half of animals sacrificed at Gadhimai are illegally brought in from India.
