On the 3rd of February 2011, millions of people will celebrate Chinese New Year. Many Chinese will traditionally mark the occasion by buying luxurious clothes and gifts.

This is a boom time for fur sellers, who aim to maximize their sales of coats, hats, cushions, bedcovers or other accessories made from pelts.

The bloody business is booming

Hundreds of thousands of dogs, cats, rabbits, raccoons and foxes must die each year to supply the demand. They will be brutally killed and, horrific as it sounds, often skinned whilst still alive.

Chinese people now have more money to spend, together with ready access to online fur stores, so the fur industry is making a killing.

In 2010 China was the biggest consumer of fur (70%) in the world, a figure which is only increasing. Even more worryingly – the majority of buyers is the younger generation, 20-30 years of age.

Fur producers use the Year of the Rabbit, and celebrity endorsements to promote their gruesome products to the (mainly young) public.

Stop fur fashion

ACTAsia and local animal protection groups have launched a public awareness campaign. We urge the Chinese people to stop buying fur products stained with so much appalling animal suffering.

Sina.com, the Chinese equivalent to Google, is backing our campaign with a special anti-fur page. Our campaign is also live a on the most popular social network (Chinese ‘Twitter’) with almost 1.5 million subscribers. The response is huge! We’re very pleased to be receiving massive support from celebrities who condemn wearing fur.

The next step is to take it to a personal level by talking to consumers in shopping malls in big cities like Shanghai and Beijing.

Please help us now!

We need to reach more people, so we can stop them contributing to cruelty in the name of fashion.
